Shiawassee county's Randy Colbry has completed rehab.. During his rehabilitation classes he realized that he had a drinking problem and has voluntarily joined AA.. It was stated that he has attended AA every day since he completed the rehab program.. and has taken this very seriously..

It has also been stated that he his very humbled by his actions and that he has thought about it daily for the past 30 days...

His actions on that Tuesday afternoon were nearly unimaginable to most of us.. However, A wise man always learns from his mistakes, perhaps he will become a better man...

Is there any sarcasm in this post? It is hard to tell.. :) I am sure his expensive defense attorney pushed for that. Oh well. I wish him the best of luck with his sobriety.

No sarcasm inkywalnut74, I do think Mr Colbry is smart enough to come to those realizations on his own....

However. IMO it's a little to late...

Will there still be a protest at the arraignment?

I'd like to suggest that people bring their tea bags, in a double protest.

(Drink this instead, Mr. Colbry. It's the brisk tea.)

Ummmmm...you don't actually believe this do you??? Because I find it incredulous, I am assuming this is sarcastic?

Every criminal wants to come across as remorseful (unless he or she is a sociopath maybe). Some actually are.

Separating the wheat form the chaff on any large scale level is, quite frankly, impossible.

The people who know the particular person should be able to do so, but of course they have their own motivations, which are likely to cast further suspicion on the sincerity of any pronouncements of remorse.

So, I am more than happy to say "what was done was bad." For me, this is enough.

You aren't going to ever catch me saying "the person who did the bad thing is bad" or "the person who did the bad thing is good" unless I know that person. Some people are more than willing to throw stones at someone based upon some set of actions that occurred in a small snapshot of time out of a lengthy existence. Maybe that snapshot is actually representative of the person, maybe it isn't. Some snapshots might be better indicators of the larger picture, while some might be generally poor indicators of the larger picture. The point is that if we do not know what the entire picture looks like, all we are doing is generalizing from a particular, which is more often than not a risky proposition.

I am interested in punishing bad deeds. Certain deeds have been determined to cost society certain amounts, and those are assessed accordingly to the criminal by the criminal justice system when those deeds are uncovered. The idea being we punish to deter (the bad act might encourage others to do the same should it go unpunished) and we punish because the criminal wants us to (this sounds perverse, but also makes sense - we act as we want others to act towards us, a criminal indicates he does not want the law to apply to him, so when he is caught we are allowed to do things to him that we wouldn't normally do to others because he has indicated by his prior acts that is how he wants to interact with society - ergo, we can confine him when we are not ordinarily allowed to confine people, and to do so is an affirmation of his own desires).

That is, in a nutshell, my philosophy on crime. You break the law, you get punished for breaking the law according to the cost (seriousness if you prefer) of your crime. I am not interested in punishing people for their character. I simply have no accurate way of measuring character.

Actually I recently read that quote from a Law Enforcement Official on a crime that had been committed where the individuals were expressing extreme remorse for their crimes.

So it has to be an accurate cliché, who would know the criminal mind better than the law?

Mostly they are sorry they were caught. jmho

But they do need to show the court remorse to get as light a sentence as possible.
